The 6th Generation Harsh Environment dual activity dynamically positioned (DP3) drillship, Stena DrillMAX, is now in Guyana waters and will begin operations with a series of campaigns at the deepwater multi-billion-barrel Stabroek Block.

In March the Stena DrillMAX will spud the Longtail-3 appraisal well, which will provide additional data in the Turbot/Longtail area and will drill a deeper section that will target lower Campanian and Santonian geologic intervals.

Then in May, ExxonMobil is slated to spud the Whiptail-1 exploration well, located approximately 12 miles east of Liza. This well will target Campanian and Santonian aged reservoirs and will be drilled by the Stena DrillMAX.

Noble and Stena are the two established drillers for ExxonMobil in the region and this year will have a total of six drillships working on continuously extended deals, under its Commercial Enabling Agreements (CEA), in the region.

These plans are part of a flurry of activity expected offshore Guyana this year as ExxonMobil ramps up its search for even more hydrocarbons, targeting deeper and risker prospects.

“We expect to drill more than a dozen exploration and appraisal wells over the next year and several of those would be out with that core area in the southeast of the Stabroek block,” President of ExxonMobil Guyana, Alistair Routledge told OilNOW in a recent interview.

The company will soon be adding the Noble Sam Croft to its offshore fleet, bringing the total number of drillships to six.
