As part of a wider effort to bolster the capabilities of Surinamese businesses, Chevron and Staatsolie are set to host a Supplier Development Program later this month. This initiative follows the successful 2023 Blue Wave Supplier Development Program launch, a collaborative effort with ExxonMobil and Chevron.

The upcoming Staatsolie-Chevron program is scheduled for January 23, 2024, at the Royal Torarica Ballroom, Paramaribo. It aims to elevate the business operations of local companies, enabling them to better supply goods and services to the offshore oil and gas sector.

The 2023 Blue Wave launch saw the participation of 25 companies, with plans underway for a second group in the first quarter of 2024. This upcoming forum is particularly significant for companies that did not participate in the 2023 Blue Wave program. They will be able to learn about the forthcoming Blue Wave Training Program.

Chevron’s involvement is particularly noteworthy given its substantial stakes in multiple offshore blocks in Suriname. The company operates Block 5 with a 40% stake, block 7 with an 80% stake, and holds a 67% stake in Block 42 and a 33% stake in Block 59. These interests position Chevron to contribute critically to developing local content in Suriname’s oil sector.

The planned development of oil fields in block 58 by TotalEnergies and APA Corporation, expected to secure government approvals in late 2024, prominently underscores the growing potential for Surinamese companies to play a substantial role in this sector. Exploration drilling is also expected in other blocks.

November 2023 also marked a notable event for local content development in Suriname with a conference organized by the Local Content Alliance, comprising Organizational Transformers and First Meridian NV Safety Training Center. The event featured esteemed speakers and focused on various topics such as procurement strategies, female leadership, the government’s role in local content, and the importance of soft skills in the oil and gas industry.
