Italian multinational oil and gas company Eni announced on Monday that it has been recognized as Global Compact LEAD, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations’ corporate sustainability initiative.

The decision was revealed at UN Headquarters in New York during the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2018, the company said.

“Today’s decision is a recognition of Eni’s continued efforts on sustainability, which is an integral part of each of our businesses,” the company’s Chief Executive Officer Claudio Descalzi said on Monday.

The Global Compact is a United Nations initiative aimed at mobilizing companies from various industries to work on making business and society more sustainable. It is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take action in support of UN goals and issues embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Global Compact is a leadership platform for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible corporate practices. Launched in 2000, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with more than 9,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and nearly 70 Local Networks.
