Europe is already one of the largest buyers of Guyana’s crude, but its interest in the country is increasingly extending beyond oil and gas, according to Private Sector Commission (PSC) Chairman Gerry Gouveia Jr.

During the August 10 edition of the Energy Perspectives podcast, Gouveia said European governments and businesses are now looking at Guyana as a potential source of other commodities and as a broader trading partner.

He identified agriculture, timber and logistics as areas of interest for Europe.

“Europe [government] has taken a group of Guyanese across Europe to go and learn about logistics because they want to make sure that we’re speaking the same language. There’s another one coming up to deal with timber and lumber. There’s another one happening soon to deal with agriculture and agro-processing,” the PSC Chairman disclosed.

Gouveia described France as a particular area of growing interest after recently presenting Guyana’s investment opportunities to the country’s minister of foreign trade, private sector organizations and government business development agencies.

He said the growing European interest presents an opportunity for Guyana to attract more foreign capital while strengthening local businesses.

“If I was to give you four ways of being successful in Guyana, the first thing is that we need to embrace foreign direct investment. We need to make sure that we’re bringing capital to the table… So, we were very fortunate Europe has taken a specific interest in Guyana, especially with what’s going on in the Middle East and the conflicts over there,” he added.

The broader interest comes as Guyana’s oil industry strengthens its commercial ties with Europe. European countries accounted for about 66% of Guyana’s crude exports in 2024, according to shipping data from London Stock Exchange Group. Europe continues to take the lion’s share of crude exports from Guyana.
