ExxonMobil Guyana’s President, Alistair Routledge, has hailed 2024 as a year of exemplary safety performance for the company.

“I’m happy to say we had a strong safety year in 2024, a platform that we expect to build on…So, first and foremost, that’s what’s top of mind, keeping everybody safe,” Routledge shared during a Jan. 5 episode of Energy Perspectives.

The ExxonMobil President said the company intends to implement a new personnel safety management system.

Safety is a critical tenet in Exxon’s operations in the Stabroek Block and across the globe. Its local incident management team went through training with The Response Group, a Texas-based crisis management and emergency response company.

The team has various levels of responses which are triggered based on the severity of an incident. They have also gone through command systems training, which prepares them to develop a coordinated approach to responding to incidents.

This year, with safety remaining at the forefront, Routledge said Exxon will continue to build on its production platforms.

“We have the three producing assets – Liza Phase 1, Phase 2, and Payara – which started up late in 2023 but gave us a tremendous boost in production and performance in 2024. In 2025, we’re looking forward to the arrival of the yellowtail [floating production storage and offloading vessel] FPSO,” he added. The vessel is expected to be in operation in Guyana by the fourth quarter.

“So, it’s another exciting year on the project execution and production front for our operations in the Stabroek Block,” he continued.

The block has yielded over 30 major discoveries since 2015, with recoverable resources exceeding 11.6 billion barrels of oil. ExxonMobil aims to deploy six FPSO vessels by 2027, targeting production above 1.2 million barrels per day.

It is anticipated that up to ten FPSOs could eventually operate in Guyana’s waters.
