Guysons Oil and Gas Services has set the pace for potential suppliers in Guyana’s petroleum sector by becoming the first local company in the emerging industry to meet the requirements for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO 9001:2015.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at a press conference held at ExxonMobil Guyana’s Centre for Local Business Development (CLBD), South Road, Georgetown.

Chief Executive Officer of Guysons Oil and Gas, Faizal Khan, said this is a major milestone that took many months of planning, commitment and hard work. He also underscored that this certification could not have been possible without the training, capacity building, expert advice and guidance from CLBD.

“We are currently going through tenders for companies in Brazil and in Trinidad and Tobago. That wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the ISO certification. We are also speaking to internationally based investors and partners who wanted to see the quality management system in place at Guysons before they would consider taking discussions further,” he told reporters and special invitees, at the announcement.

The ISO 9001:2015 certification requirements comprise a range of international quality control standards to be meticulously applied and maintained by companies before certification as approved suppliers of top-quality goods and services in various industries. Guysons Oil and Gas achievement means its Quality Management Systems meet the standards of the oil and gas sector.

Guysons Engineering, a sister company of Guysons Oil and Gas, also achieved the ISO Standard.

Khan told OilNOW on Wednesday that restructuring the companies’ operations to meet ISO certification requirements was an intense process requiring millions of dollars and many sleepless nights in a race to bring operations up to standard.

The Guysons executive disclosed that the companies are preparing for a significant expansion of business, and to access other opportunities in the oil and gas sector. To this end, Guysons has identified a site to house a pipe-yard for the storage of industry-related material, a pipe-shop for servicing, cutting and threading pipes for industry operators, as well as an expanded machine-shop.

CLBD Project Director, Patrick Henry, speaking at the announcement, said Guysons ISO certification is a clear example of the level of work being done at the facility. He said it is not only helping businesses to become knowledgeable about the sector or to understand the procurement process, but also it helps them to become competitive internationally so as to become an integral part of the supply chain.

“Kudos has to go to Guysons on the time and money that they invested in this process…Guysons had to make investments in their staff, in their facilities, in their procedures and in their training to get better to meet the requirements,” Henry pointed out.

Meanwhile, ExxonMobil Guyana’s Operations Manager, Mike Ryan, in brief remarks also spoke of the importance of the certification to the Guysons companies.

He noted that, “ExxonMobil and others in the oil and gas industry recognize the Standard as something we can work with. It is a demonstration of how they would work and they collaborate within the industry. It provides better internal management, increases efficiency and effectiveness of the processes, improves customer retention and acquisition and it provides consistent outcomes to be measured and monitored.”

Guysons success in achieving the ISO 9001:2015 requirements has opened unlimited opportunities for growth. Efforts are underway by Guysons Oil and Gas to attain American Petroleum Institute (API) certification as well as other ISO certifications.

To cater for this expansion of the businesses and to access other opportunities in the oil and gas sector, Guysons has acquired additional space for industry-related material and is already enlarging the current site to accommodate these expansions and also to facilitate the expansion of their Machine Shop capabilities.
