Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) commissioned its heavy lift berths and “Commander in Chief” Crane on Friday at its Houston compound.

Engineering Manager, Bhageshwar Murli, said the expansion cost US$25 million.

The four berths form part of 1,400 feet of waterfront development, primarily outfitted to serve the offshore operations of ExxonMobil affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL).

Guyana’s President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali commended the team for delivering a crane and berths at an unprecedented capacity in the region. Ali said the investment made in this expansion is no small hustle.

“This facility is absolutely critical to our operations offshore. It’s a multi service one-stop shop,” Esso’s President, Alistair Routledge said during the commissioning ceremony.

He reminded that Esso signed an 11-year contract extension with GYSBI that affords it more opportunities for growth. GYSBI’s new contract will run up to 2033, building on the existing contract that was awarded back in 2017.

He said he is hopeful for success for Guyana as it moves to license more offshore blocks, noting that GYSBI is now prepared to provide support to other operations, as they have done with Repsol during drilling of Beebei-Potaro in 2022, and now CGX Energy, as it drills the Wei-1 well.

What is a uniquely Guyanese success story, GYSBI’s Executive Director, Robin Muneshwer said, was a result of tremendous entrepreneurial risk taken by Guyanese company, Muneshwers Limited to partner with foreign companies.

During the ceremony, speakers honoured the life of Royston Souvenir, one worker who died during an accident related to construction works.

“This accident engendered an extreme focus on safety and the safety culture of our work force,” Murli told attendees.

Routledge said that this incident should cause all parties to recommit themselves to a manner of operation to prevent any repetition.
