The Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) has awarded technical scholarships to eleven outstanding students as part of its commitment to community development as it undertakes critical work on the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, West Bank Demerara.
GYSBI in a release said the 2024 cohort includes ten students from Region Three and one from Region Nine (South Rupununi), who will pursue studies in areas such as Building and Civil Engineering, Electrical Installation, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science at the Georgetown Technical Institute and the Leonora Technical Institute.

This year’s scholarships were initially offered to ten students from the Essequibo Islands–West Demerara region, aligning with GYSBI’s ongoing involvement in the Gas-to-Energy project. However, the company said it was inspired to award an additional scholarship to Daniel Henry from Region Nine after he shared the financial challenges he faced in continuing his education.
General Manager Robert Albiez expressed pride in the programme, stating, “I have been with Guyana Shore Base almost seven years and in almost all my time here, this is the thing that I am most proud of, that we have put in place.” He encouraged the recipients to stay focused on their studies, emphasizing that their efforts now will shape their futures.

Deputy General Manager Rabin Chandarpal urged the students to work hard and make the most of the opportunity. “You are not always going to be the brightest, you are not always going to be the most talented, but you certainly can strive to be the hardest working and that is a huge advantage that you will have going forward in life,” he advised.
The GYSBI Technical Scholarship Programme offers internships during semester breaks to provide hands-on training and knowledge transfer. Graduates can also benefit from potential full-time employment with the company.
Matthew Seepersaud, a 2023 graduate of the programme, shared his experience with the new cohort, highlighting the transformative impact of the scholarship on his career and personal development. Seepersaud, now employed in GYSBI’s Maintenance Department, encouraged the new recipients to embrace the opportunity and strive for excellence.
Daniel Bisnauth, a successful applicant after reapplying this year, expressed gratitude for the scholarship. “This scholarship is not just a financial relief but an incredible investment in our future. It empowers us to focus on our studies and personal growth,” he said.
