Dear Editor,
As Guyana’s oil sector continues to expand at a remarkable pace, the nation stands on the brink of a transformative era. The discovery of vast oil reserves has not only positioned Guyana as a critical player in the global energy market, but it has also opened up a myriad of opportunities for economic growth and development. Our rapidly growing industry offers a unique chance for Guyanese, particularly those who have emigrated, to return home and play a crucial role in the nation’s progress.
Given this favourable landscape, now is an opportune time for Guyanese expatriates to consider returning home. The demand for skilled professionals in various fields associated with the oil industry is not just high, it’s soaring exponentially. Engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, legal experts and business professionals are just a few examples of the talent needed to support this rapidly growing sector. Editor, returning home not only allows individuals to leverage their expertise but also contributes significantly to the nation’s development and prosperity.
I must reiterate that Guyana has immense potential for personal and professional growth. Returning Guyanese can play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future by tapping into the opportunities presented by the oil sector. It is a time of unprecedented opportunities, one that calls for collective effort and national unity.
Editor, it must be highlighted that the government’s strategic use of oil revenues to create jobs and diversify the economy is evident. However, despite these positive developments, challenges remain. The rapid economic growth – and some will firmly say the ‘lack of equal opportunity’ has led to a shortage of skilled labour and rising inflations. As a result, Editor, the entrepreneurial spirit must remain strong. With businesses continuously establishing, hiring and adapting to the fast-moving economy, Guyanese ought to now scout out opportunities that are aligned with their qualifications or even if, build their capacity so they can service the oil and gas sector – which is a lucrative sector that also requires more human resources.
Regards,
Greg Lynch
