Guyana’s MATPAL Marine Institute Inc. is celebrating a significant milestone in maritime education and training as the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation (ACMF) extends its support to a new cohort of students. Over the past two years, MATPAL said ACMF’s sponsorship has already left a substantial impact, benefiting both cadets and the maritime and oil and gas industries in Guyana.

In 2022, ACMF took a groundbreaking step by sponsoring Maritime Deck Cadets enrolled in MATPAL’s four-year Cadet program. This support played a vital role in nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals.

And building upon this success, ACMF further intensified its commitment in 2023 by offering full scholarships and one-off grants to twelve Deck and Engineering Cadets from the 2023 Cohort.

Dr. Geneive Brown Metzger, President of ACMF, stated, “MATPAL has been offering critical training for over two decades. We commit to working across institutions to do our part to support Guyanese students aspiring to work in the oil and gas sector.”

The partnership between ACMF and MATPAL Marine Institute Inc. represents a remarkable journey towards elevating maritime education and training. Coleen Abrams, Chief Executive Officer of MATPAL, expressed her appreciation for ACMF’s unwavering support, acknowledging the impact it has had on both cadets and the broader maritime and oil and gas industries in Guyana.

“ACMF’s sponsorship initiatives have not only alleviated financial barriers for Cadets but have also bolstered Guyana’s maritime and oil and gas industry. Their continued support and involvement are commendable, and we applaud their recognition of MATPAL’s training programs and their dedication to shaping the maritime workforce of the future”.

MATPAL Marine Institute Inc., established in October 1999 and Guyana’s first ISO 9001:2015 certified maritime institute, has played a pivotal role in shaping maritime education, training, and certification in the region. With a legacy of over six thousand trained professionals and a commitment to excellence, MATPAL continues to enrich Guyana’s maritime landscape and contribute to the broader regional industry.
