The government of Guyana and the United States Embassy in Guyana announced a flyover of two U.S. Navy aircraft, F/A-18F Super Hornets in Guyana.

The embassy said the jets, which were transported on the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, were scheduled to fly over Georgetown from 2:00 pm on May 9, 2024.

This exercise is being coordinated by the Guyana Defence Force in collaboration with the United States Southern Command. Both the Guyana government and the US Embassy said the exercise is part of a defense cooperation pact between the two countries.

In a separate update, the embassy said that U.S. Marine Corps Major General (MajGen) Julie Nethercot, U.S. Southern Command Strategy, Policy, and Plans Director, visited Guyana on May 6-8. The Strategy, Policy, and Plans Directorate at U.S. Southern Command oversees strategic planning, policy development, and security cooperation coordination for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The embassy stated, “The Directorate directly supports U.S. Southern Command’s goals and objectives in deterring aggression, defeating threats, rapidly responding to crises, and working with allies and partner nations to strengthen the region’s capacity to ensure a secure, free, and prosperous Western Hemisphere.”

During her visit, MajGen Nethercot met with Brigadier Omar Khan, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff, to discuss ongoing security cooperation and security assistance initiatives to advance technology platforms.  The embassy said this was her second visit to Guyana.
