The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) will be staging a two-day Business Development Forum (BDF) which is intended to provide a platform for the growth of businesses in Guyana.

The BDF was originally conceptualized as a forum for small businesses, however, after discussions, research and analysis, it was realized that a forum to foster improvement of the internal dynamics of all firms in Guyana’s private sector was necessary.

This is according to President of GCCI, Deodat Indar, who told OilNOW during an interview on Wednesday that the forum will facilitate micro, small, medium and large-scale businesses. “The event will have around 30 speakers representing key institutions such as the Guyana Revenue Authority, National Insurance Scheme and the University of Guyana who will talk about what their entity can do to help the private sector in Guyana,” he said.

GCCI has developed a three-pronged approach which it believes will adequately address the needs of the different types of business entities that will be participating in the event. This includes focus on and the use of role models, education and academia and institutions and agencies.

Mr. Indar said the primary question the BDF is seeking to answer is how a company in Guyana can grow from one category to another.

“In order to answer this question, the Business Development Forum will facilitate presentations, panel discussions, and a public exhibition, and will develop a strategy document from the presentations and panel discussions on how to improve the internal dynamics of companies in Guyana,” he stated.

The event, he said, is not intended to be ‘another oil and gas seminar’ but will focus broadly on all aspects of business operations and development in the South American country. Nevertheless, he said discussions will take place that focuses on “how do you align yourself to make sure you become part of that pool of eligible suppliers to the oil and gas industry.”

GCCI expects more than 100 companies to participate in the event, which will take place on July 20-21 at the Pegasus Hotel in Guyana’s capital city, Georgetown.
