Dutch company, Fugro, says it is willing to participate in efforts to educate Guyanese on offshore exploration and production operations. Fugro is already providing specialized training to a number of persons employed at Ground Structures Engineering Consultants Inc.; a Guyanese company with which Fugro has a partnership.

The Netherlands-based firm is a leading independent provider of geo-intelligence and asset integrity solutions for large constructions, infrastructure and natural resources. The company provides the technical data and information required to design, construct and maintain structures and infrastructure in a safe, reliable and efficient manner.

Business Development Manager, Brian Hottman, told OilNOW in a recent interview that after he attended a meeting in Georgetown, Guyana at which the issue of setting up an oil refinery in the country was discussed, he realized more knowledge and awareness efforts were needed to bring the population up to speed.

“I think that some of the things I am willing to offer to the public in Guyana is maybe do an open forum to give a basic scenario of how offshore life at the field works because I think a lot people are not really up to speed on how all the different components work,” he said.

Fugro is already working with several agencies in Guyana, such as the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Environmental Protection Agency where the scope for knowledge transfer and training exist.

Fugro is currently providing training in Houston, Texas, for 5 staff members of Ground Structures, in offshore geotechnical investigation.  Ground Structures have also had 6 persons certified for sea survival with Fugro.

Guyana, being a new frontier in the oil and gas industry, will be undergoing a transformation in the coming years and its population is looking to be fully equipped and prepared to benefit from opportunities in the sector. Efforts are ongoing by the country’s government as well as NGOs to facilitate training and capacity building for persons seeking a career in oil and gas.
