A new oil and gas corridor is quickly emerging in Guyana on the East Bank of Demerara where several oil field services companies have been setting up operations in recent years.

“It seems as though Houston in Guyana is becoming like Houston in Texas; the East Bank corridor is becoming the corridor of oil and gas development which is something that we welcome,” Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, said at a ceremony to mark another major development for the area – TechnipFMC’s Guyana Service Base.

TechnipFMC plays a major role in Guyana, oil and gas development, supporting six drill rigs in the offshore Stabroek Block as well as receiving, testing, and loading out all the subsea hardware being installed. With its new facility, the company has successfully transferred all subsea activities done in Trinidad and Tobago to Guyana.

Houston also boasts the location of Guyana’s largest shore base facility – the Guyana Shore Base (GYSBI) – which is the main facility servicing deepwater operations in the South American nation.

Over the years, GYSBI has ramped up its capacity to keep up with the rapid development of the industry – from the acquisition of two heavy lift cranes and the addition of two additional berths to recently acquiring ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Further up the East Bank corridor at Land of Canaan lies Baker Hughes’ Supercentre – bringing top-tier oilfield services not only to Guyana but to its Dutch-speaking neighbor Suriname.

Baker Hughes currently provides drilling services, drill bits, and drilling and completion fluids to several drilling rigs, with its Completions and Wellbore Intervention product line supporting all upper completions for development wells in Guyana.

The latest development to the East Bank corridor is the addition of a US$40 million state-of-the-art pipe coating facility at GYSBI to provide pipe coating for offshore pipelines, giving support to the deepwater operations and the country’s landmark gas-to-energy project.
