Hess Corporation formerly Amerada Hess Corporation is a combination of two companies: Amerada Corporation, an oil producer and Explorer Company founded in 1920 and Hess Oil and Chemical, an oil refinery company, founded in 1966. A merger took place in December 1968 between the two companies forming Amerada Hess Corporation which over the years acquired a number of different arms such as a gas station network, wholesale and retail oil, natural gas & electricity marketing business, refineries and bulk storage facilities. In 2014 Hess as it is known completed a multi-year transformation to an energy company focused solely on exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas by exiting all other downstream operators. The company has exploration and production operations both on shore of the United States and Libya and off shore of Canada, South America (Guyana and Suriname), Europe (Norway and Denmark), Africa, East Asia and Australia. Along with its co venture partners Esso E&P Guyana Limited who owns a 45 percent working interest and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana Ltd. who has 25 percent interest, Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd who owns 30 percent will be expecting first production of oil in its Guyana exploration in the year 2020. Hess Corporation recently earned The Rocky Mountain Oil & Gas Awards 2016 Award for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility for its operations in the North Dakota Bakken.
