A delegation of around 16 Jamaican companies will visit the South American country of Guyana this month in pursuit of mutually beneficial business opportunities between the CARICOM neighbours.

The visit by the Jamaican delegation to the region’s newest oil producing nation is being facilitated by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), the oldest private sector representative organization in Guyana. It is set to take place January 26 – 31.

GCCI told its membership on Monday one of the objectives of the trade mission is to foster collaborative business relationships and to promote mutual growth and development opportunities for the Jamaican and Guyanese economies, through increased trade and commerce.

Just recently, former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson-Miller, delivered the keynote address at GCCI’s 130th Annual Awards and Gala Dinner, in Georgetown.

The Chamber, a strong advocate of local content development, has been playing a lead role in the discussions relating to the growth and development of Guyana’s emerging oil and gas industry.

It has also been facilitating trade missions with other CARICOM territories and extra regional oil and gas hotspots such as Aberdeen and Newfoundland.

Guyana entered the league of oil producing nations on December 20 when US oil major ExxonMobil began production at the Liza Phase 1 Development.

Jamaica itself has been on a quest to strike black gold offshore as part of increased interest and hope region-wide, fuelled by ExxonMobil’s string of discoveries in Guyana.
