Italian oilfield services company Saipem will soon commence a search for local vendors to supply goods and services for the operation of its fabrication yard and logistics area that is currently under construction in Guyana.

Saipem has been awarded subsea contracts for the first two phases of the Liza development as well as the Payara development in the Stabroek Block. The company is currently constructing its fabrication yard, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of this year.

The facility will feature a heavy load bearing jetty, the largest heavy lift crane in Guyana and specialized welding and testing equipment. All construction work for the new facility has been awarded to local Guyanese contractors.

Offshore Area Procurement Manager, Gianluigi Della Rosa, during the Guyana Supplier Forum 2021 on Monday, announced that the company will begin the search for eligible Guyanese companies to equip the fabrication yard, as well as provide other services.

“We have to equip this yard with all necessary tools. Equipment: some will be coming from other Saipem yards, but many will be purchased, a lot of tools will be purchased locally, if possible. Of course, a series of service will be necessary for the ordinary and daily activities carried out at this yard,” he told local companies during the Forum.

The Procurement Manager provided an overview of some of the goods and services that will be sought, explaining, “We will be looking for materials, typical materials from Ship Chandler. This will be…like lifting materials, last minute necessities for the vessels. We had to be quick in ensuring the availability of various types of marine items. So, we will be looking for some Ship Chandlers availability in Georgetown.”

He also listed services such as spare parts supply for the equipment that will be used at the yard, including a forklift, welding machine, pipe hooks and other “typical equipment that are used in a fabrication yard.”

As it relates to the welding consumables, Della Rosa stressed the importance of quality and standard. “Of course, those have to be compatible with the welding machine that we are going to use. So, there will be specific requirements while we will be looking for eligible vendors. To those, we will address those specific requirements that those welding consumables have to get,” he disclosed.

Other goods and services that will be needed include: portable oil racks, fuel and oil provision, lifting and rigging supply, equipment and tools rental, scaffolding rental and support, and maintenance services. “So, all these materials, tools and services, we will try to source in country, in Guyana. So, this means that we will be scouting local suppliers,” the Procurement Manager assured.

He added, “We will be launching this RFQ process basically in the next few weeks—February/March—to be ready in April and May for all these supplies and services. So, basically, these are the next coming activities from my organisation and for which we are looking for local vendors.”
