ExxonMobil’s 12-well Canje Block campaign is set to begin in the second quarter of 2024, according to a Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA) for the project.

The 1,700+ page document is available for public comments until early November.

If discoveries are made, Exxon said well test(s) may be performed. Q1 2025 is the proposed end date. Exxon said that the preliminary timeline could be influenced by discoveries, determination of the need for sidetracks, and/or well tests, all of which could extend the drilling period. Those same factors could also influence the locations and sequence of subsequent wells.

Exxon has not identified the location for the potential 12 wells; the campaign is expected to tap both exploration and appraisal prospects, according to the CIA. Exxon has already drilled three wells in Canje; resulting in no commercial quantities. The Canje Block covers an area of approximately 4,800 square kilometres.

The CIA outlined that the well-drilling process is identical to others in Exxon’s previous campaigns and may include mobilisation, drilling, ancillary processes (possibly including sidetracks, coring, wireline logs, well tests, abandonment and/or vertical seismic profiling), and demobilisation.

Any future wells will be drilled in a yet-to-be-determined order. And the timing of future wells will depend on well results and prioritisation with Exxon’s other activities offshore Guyana.
