Guyana and France have announced the establishment of a French Embassy in Georgetown, slated to open its doors in 2025. France will become the first European Union member state to elevate its diplomatic representation to embassy level in Guyana.
During a meeting at State House on March 25, 2024, President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, and Stéphane Séjourné, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, exchanged views on various priority issues concerning both nations, including the establishment of the embassy.
A notable aspect of the embassy’s establishment will be the facilitation of Schengen visa issuance within Guyana, streamlining travel procedures for Guyanese citizens seeking to visit European Schengen area countries.

Furthermore, the embassy’s opening is expected to catalyze development across various sectors where French companies possess expertise. The embassy will serve as a platform for fostering partnerships and investment opportunities, driving economic growth and innovation in Guyana, a communique published by the Guyana government said.
Additionally, the establishment of the French Embassy is expected to promote the strengthening of ties between Guyana and French Guiana, as well as France’s engagement with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), headquartered in Georgetown.
In conjunction with the embassy announcement, Guyana revealed its acquisition of maritime patrol assets from France.
