SBM Offshore Guyana’s trainee technicians have completed their training at the Facility Simulator (FacTor) Unit of the Guyana Technical Training College Incorporated (GTTCI). A small ceremony on July 5 at GTTCI in Port Mourant, Berbice, honored the trainees.
The 24 Guyanese graduates underwent nine months of practical skills training in Instrumentation, Production, Electrical, and Mechanical fields. They are the first batch to receive training at GTTCI and will soon move on to practical training onboard the Liza Unity FPSO vessel.
FacTor, established earlier this year with support from the Government of Guyana, ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess, CNOOC, and SBM Offshore Guyana, is a key part of SBM Offshore Guyana’s local content commitment.
Martin Cheong, General Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, advised the graduates to, “Embrace every challenge as an opportunity to expand your skills and deepen your understanding of the offshore sector.”
President of ExxonMobil Guyana, Alistair Routledge, highlighted the company’s commitment to investing in the people of Guyana, stating, “The goal is the people and we have to invest in the people because that sort of raises standards and opportunities for people in the country.”

GTTCI Director, Professor Clement Sankat, called the event “a small but major milestone for the development of technical training of Guyanese.”
Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, emphasized the importance of human resources for a thriving economy, saying, “The most important resource is not all of these natural resources that we manage but it is our human resource, our human capital.”
Preya Singh, the best-performing trainee, reflected on the journey, stating, “We discovered our passions, honed our skills, and laid the foundation for our future endeavours.”
SBM Offshore Guyana said it remains dedicated to its local content development strategy and continues to support the upskilling of Guyanese through various programs, including the Graduate Engineers’ Programme and Scholarship Programme for Indigenous Women in STEM.
