The University of Guyana (UG) has begun the process of recruiting specialist for its incoming Department of Petroleum and Geological Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology which is scheduled to become operational from January 2019.

Addressing the ‘Local Content Forum’ held by the University’s School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) on Monday, July 23 , at the Arthur Chung Convention Center, Vice Chancellor of UG, Professor Ivelaw Griffith reminded that two New Associate and Masters degree programmes in Petroleum Engineering will be offered from January 2019, and they are looking for educators for those programmes.

“We advertised for an expression of interest, I will share with you, in regard to the Faculty of Engineering and Petroleum…the skills, the positions we are looking to fill. We’re looking to fill positions in Petroleum Engineering, specializing in Exploration and Exploitation, we’re looking for Petroleum Geo-Scientists, we are looking for Petro-physicists, we are looking for a reservoir engineer, and we are looking for drilling and production specialists,” he revealed.

Professor Griffith went on to share news of a partnership between UG and the Technical Institutes across Guyana, in relation to the establishment of a Consortium on Engineering and Mining, saying “Conscious of the reality of what is needed for the Oil and Gas, and the allied sectors are not deliverable only in an educational context from the University…the technical institutes are critical. And so, I extended the institution and we are going to be establishing, along with the technical institutes and the TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), a Consortium on energy and mining so that the University of Guyana, along with the technical institutes…we’re going to be in preparation, not hoping for luck doing what collectively we need to do to be sure that we are adequately prepared for that journey.”

According to the Professor, with the emerging Oil and Gas industry and first oil scheduled for 2020, “We don’t have the luxury of waiting and hoping for luck. We have got to actualize, we have got to emphasize, we have got to focus on preparation.”
