Stuart Young will continue to lead Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries in his new position as Prime Minister. He was sworn in on March 17.
Young was originally appointed Minister of Energy on April 19, 2021, in addition to his duties as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, following the death of Franklin Khan.
He previously held the posts of Minister of National Security, Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, and Minister of Communications.
His appointment to PM comes at a time when Trinidad is grappling with a prolonged decline in natural gas production, posing a serious threat to Trinidadians’ quality of life. Young’s ascension also comes at a critical moment in Trinidad’s history, as the nation faces an unprecedented surge in killings and gang violence. A state of emergency was declared in late December 2024.

Following his swearing-in ceremony, Young, according to the Trinidad Guardian said, “It’s a great honour to be the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. This is an honour only seven persons have had before me and I am taking that very seriously, especially the responsibility that I know that comes along with it and apart from being honoured and a sense of great responsibility, I’m really looking forward to delivering for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago in this new role and portfolio.”
Young envisions a future with greater opportunities for Trinidad youths, particularly in the entertainment industry – plans are ongoing to position the country’s premier Carnival event as a marketable cultural asset. He also noted that his administration will prioritize national security and economic growth.
