Dear Editor,
We recently had a visit by the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who emphasised that any aggression towards Guyana or its economic interests, including ExxonMobil, would result in severe consequences. This statement sends a clear and resolute message that the US stands firmly with Guyana in defence of its territorial integrity and economic prosperity.
Editor, the partnership between the US and Guyana extends beyond military assurances. As a country on the verge of ‘big’ change, Guyana is set to leverage its vast oil and gas resources to create a future of sustained economic growth. Secretary Rubio rightly highlighted that while natural resources play a foundational role in this progress, the potential for expansion into technology, agriculture, and ecotourism is immense. The U.S. remains committed to supporting Guyana in these critical areas, ensuring that energy security and infrastructure development foster long-term success.
Furthermore, recent joint military exercises between the US Navy and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) further cemented their security commitment. The presence of US naval forces in Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) demonstrates the US’s readiness to support Guyana against any threats. Rubio stated that the US has global military capabilities and is committed to Guyana’s sovereignty.
Editor, I believe that in addition to security, Guyana’s US partnership is built on shared economic and strategic interests. With ExxonMobil spearheading oil exploration in the Stabroek Block, our collaboration is bound to bring mutual benefits, economic diversification, and industrial advancement.
The US views Guyana as an essential partner in the Western Hemisphere and stands ready to support our development and security. The message is clear: Any attack on Guyana or its economic assets will not be tolerated, and the US will continue to be a steadfast ally in safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and ensuring its prosperity.
Regards,
Shelly Singh
