Dear Editor,

As a third-year Business Management student at the University of Guyana and an aspiring entrepreneur, I take great pride in witnessing Guyana’s emergence on the global stage, fuelled by the recent oil boom.

Being recognised as the fastest-growing economy in the world, whilst upholding our environmental integrity, is truly a remarkable achievement. We have managed to enhance our economic development without compromising the heart of our nation: our rich and vital forestry.

These factors have significantly contributed to an increase in tourist arrivals and the return of nationals.

Guyana once faced a significant brain drain driven by high migration rates, as opportunities were scarce and difficult to access. The recent influx of international chains establishing their business operations in our backyard, coupled with the government’s local content policy to favour Guyanese workers and firms in the energy sector, shows us students that our perseverance and dedication to our studies will be valued.

Once we graduate, there will be vast opportunities to hone our skills and be successful as business owners or employees.

Guyana’s emergence in the global field has given us a renewed sense of motivation and inspires us to join the workforce and play an active role in shaping our expanding economy.

Sincerely,

Timeka Gomes
