Dear Editor,

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is underway, and as anticipated as the men’s matches are, the fourth edition of the Women’s CPL is proving to be just as exciting. The Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders are putting on a show for the fans.

What I am most pleased about is that women are now afforded the opportunity to showcase their talent on a global stage. This is more than just another tournament; it is a vehicle for the development of women’s sport regionally and, more importantly, locally. While the women’s tournament is still in its early stages, it is presenting women with possibilities that they did not previously have.

Notably, the Guyana Amazon Warriors women’s team enjoys the support of ExxonMobil Guyana.

However, my gripe with the tournament is that there is very little advertising being done to promote the game, especially since all the games are being played right here in Guyana. More needs to be done to spread awareness that the matches are happening. In my view, this is the only way we would ensure the women get the support they need while also familiarizing cricket fans with the top women cricketers, helping them to become household names. Sponsoring the team should also be accompanied by good promotional efforts.

Overall, the tournament is great, full of excitement, and is filled with as many thrills as the men’s game. While the Guyana Amazon Warriors women have not won the tournament to date, I am optimistic that this year ‘is we year’.

Sincerely,

Michael Singh
