Dear Editor,

Guyana’s oil boom is sparking conversation worldwide, but the real measure of success isn’t how many barrels we pump; it’s how our people benefit. Every job created, every local business engaged, and every young professional trained is a chance to turn oil into opportunity.

Already, thousands of Guyanese are working in the sector, and hundreds of local companies supply services to oil projects. That’s progress, but we must go further. Skills training, entrepreneurship support, and community development can ensure that wealth flows to every corner of our country, not just the city or the coast.

The next five years under President Ali’s leadership could be transformative. I can only hope that as the rigs rise offshore, our communities rise onshore – stronger, skilled, and ready to thrive. After all, barrels alone don’t build a nation; people do.

Sincerely,

Leah October
