Dear Editor,

Attending Guyana’s Fifth Energy Conference was an eye-opening experience for me as a young person eager to explore opportunities in the oil and gas sector. It was inspiring to see how swiftly our nation has progressed from first oil to becoming a globally recognised energy producer.

What stood out most was the emphasis on investing in people. The discussions on technical training and the use of digital technology in education highlighted that there is a clear pathway for young professionals to gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in this industry.

The opportunity to converse directly with representatives from major oil and gas companies, as well as with young Guyanese who work in the sector and own businesses, was invaluable. This allowed me to see the variety of roles available, from engineering and technology to logistics and environmental services. These interactions not only expanded my understanding of the sector but also motivated me to think ambitiously about my own career path.

With continued strategic partnerships involving investors and allies from the United States and Middle Eastern nations, I am confident that young Guyanese will continue to find opportunities to learn, grow and contribute to our nation’s energy success. The Conference reminded me that bold vision, collaboration and investment in talent are key to transforming resource wealth into lasting national prosperity.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Samuels
