Petrobras is preparing to drill four wells in Rio de Janeiro as it moves ahead with a pilot project to test carbon capture and storage (CCS) in a saline reservoir.

The São Tomé CCS Pilot Project will be the first in Latin America to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial sources, transport it by pipeline and store it underground in a saline reservoir.

The Brazilian oil company disclosed on August 17 that the wells will be drilled at the Barra do Furado Station in Quissamã under a contract awarded to Halliburton. The program includes one vertical injection well and three directional wells to monitor the reservoir.

“The objective of the CCS (carbon capture and storage) pilot is to test and validate a range of technologies while capturing up to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year for three years. Drilling and completion of the wells, together with all necessary infrastructure, will be completed by 2028,” the company stated.

Petrobras is also testing technologies that could support future commercial CCS projects in Brazil. These include fiber-optic casing for real-time monitoring of the CO2 plume, CO2-resistant materials, and a reservoir sampling system that does not require well intervention.

According to Petrobras, the project will also allow Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and State Environmental Institute (INEA) to assess CCS procedures and standards under operating conditions.

The pilot is part of Petrobras’ research, development and innovation efforts and supports the company’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
