Approximately 100 Guyanese will be offered a paid internship opportunity as part of local content training initiatives being implemented this year.
Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, who presented Guyana’s 2024 budget on Jan. 15, reported that the program will be spread across the 45 tier 1 contractors operating in Guyana’s oil industry.
The possibility exists for those interns to be absorbed by the contractors and be gainfully employed.
The government is placing more focus on technical hands-on training this year, the finance minister said.
“The implementation of the Local Content Act in Guyana has proven to be a catalyst for numerous partnerships between foreign and local companies, fostering a collaborative environment in the nation’s burgeoning petroleum industry,” Singh stated.
He said these partnerships contribute significantly to capacity building.
This year, 601 Guyanese are expected to be hired in the oil sector; 509 in 2025, and 536 in 2026 – bringing the total to 1,600 over the next three years.
Guyana is also expected to see the development of an enhanced digital platform, which the Finance Minister explained will allow the immediate notification of employment opportunities and procurement needs.
There are also expected to be local content sensitization workshops to increase further awareness of opportunities that the Local Content Act 2021 affords.
