Since Guyana’s President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s call earlier this year for locals to prepare themselves to seize more opportunities in the country’s oil and gas sector, several Guyanese business operators have been moving to expand their capabilities and step up to the proverbial plate.

One recent example of this pertains to Source One Oil and Gas Marine Supplies Inc. which is owned by local businessman, Terry Singh. The company has applied to the EPA for authorization to execute a transportation project for the oil and gas sector.

Singh’s company is an existing service-oriented operation that transports oil and gas production chemicals, tools and equipment from ports and shore-bases within Georgetown to many of ExxonMobil’s sub-contractors. These include Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Noble Corporation, Schlumberger, TechnipFMC and Tiger Tanks.

OilNOW understands that Singh’s operations currently transport various types and categories of oil and gas production chemicals of which 17% are categorised as severely toxic and 12% highly flammable, with flash points below 73.4°F (23°C). The chemicals are of both solid and liquid state and are transported in containers appropriate for the chemicals including IBC totes, drums and bulk bags. Project documents also note that chemical containers are shrink wrapped to pallets where necessary and strapped to the trucks using certified equipment.

Source One has since applied to the EPA for authorization to execute a transportation project primarily between Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara and Georgetown. Following a screening of the project, the EPA said the overall significance of environmental impacts are considered to be medium and manageable from a technical, social and financial point of view. “Therefore, this existing project is exempt from the conduct of an Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), as set out in section 11(2) of the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, Laws of Guyana,” its screening results stated.

As it stands, Source One which was registered in August 2016 has close to 40 employees and is currently undertaking ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Standard & ISO 45001: 2018 for Occupational Health and Safety certifications to be compliant by December 2021.

Singh’s company has since noted to the EPA that it is complying with the rules and regulations that are set out in the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Vehicles Standards and Regulations that are relative and applicable to Guyana. Its project documents further noted that all of its vehicles and equipment are equipped with all the required safety and protective equipment.
