As Suriname prepares for the large-scale GranMorgu offshore project, Atlas Professionals has launched a focused initiative to train and certify local talent for offshore roles, the company announced this week.

The “Greenhands Offshore” program is designed to identify and equip entry-level workers, known as greenhands, with the skills required for the demanding offshore environment.

Candidates undergo structured interviews, aptitude testing, and safety training led by experienced offshore professionals. Atlas Professionals ensures that all selected participants complete mandatory certifications for offshore work.

The program targets Suriname’s emerging workforce, aiming to build local capacity aligned with the needs of the oil and gas sector.

“Training includes modules on process safety, risk management, lifting operations, and COSHH awareness. Participants are also taught how to recognize hazards and respond effectively in emergencies,” Atlas Professionals said.

Atlas said the initiative is part of its commitment to developing a qualified and safety-conscious local workforce.

The GranMorgu project is currently under development, with first production expected in 2028. SBM Offshore, in partnership with Technip Energies, has secured contracts to build and install a floating production, storage, and offloading vessel.

Suriname’s offshore activity is expected to grow, with 10 wells forecasted for 2025-2026, according to Rystad Energy. Staatsolie anticipates five wells to be drilled in 2025 by TotalEnergies, PETRONAS, Shell, Chevron, and QatarEnergy.
