The Prosperity FPSO has completed one year of oil production operations at Guyana’s Stabroek Block. To mark the milestone, OilNOW highlights the contribution of Guyanese, Yashawantie Jennifer Pancham, who had the opportunity to test the first oil from the Payara Development.
When Yashawantie Jennifer Pancham tested first oil aboard the Prosperity FPSO, Guyana’s third floating production, storage, and offloading vessel, the pressure was immense. Reflecting on the moment, she described it as a milestone in her career. “The most memorable challenges I faced was my nervousness and the little doubts of wanting to ensure that I did the correct thing as per expectations,” she said. With numerous key figures observing, all decisions hinged on her performance.
Yet, Pancham persevered with preparation and the support of her team. “We had a plan, which was well coordinated and was followed through. I stayed calm, maintained my confidence,” she shared. A collaborative spirit and encouragement from her mentors made the process seamless. “Looking back at it, it really was the people by my side who really made the process seamless and successful,” she added.
The Prosperity team achieved a remarkable startup, marked by its efficient first oil offload and shortest background flare time. Pancham attributed this success to preparation. “Planning, clear communication and following the procedures have been the key factors in our successful startup,” she explained. Teamwork and leadership proved essential. Her mantra? “Stick to the plan!”
Since joining ChampionX Guyana Inc. in 2022, Pancham has experienced growth, particularly in navigating the oil and gas sector’s complexities. Her journey began on Guyana’s first FPSO, Liza Destiny, before transitioning to the Prosperity FPSO. “I struggled with my confidence and public speaking,” she admitted. “I always want to know and understand the ‘why’s.’ Little by little, I started to ask questions, form networks, and gain insights.”
Mentorship and camaraderie have been key to her success. “We have all connected and created a family-like structure,” she explained. “Personally, for me, being a girl in a man’s world, I did find it intimidating at first, but now, I’m everyone’s little sister. Everyone looks out for me, even on the days when I question myself.”
Reflecting on the sector’s demands, Pancham’s perspective has shifted. “From the outside, I used to think the oil and gas industry was a walk in the park,” she confessed. Now, she sees it as dynamic and complex, requiring innovation, precision, and teamwork. To newcomers, she advises embracing challenges with curiosity and adaptability. “Safety and work ethics are a top priority. No shortcuts, no bending the corners,” she emphasized.
Pancham’s fascination with processes, particularly seawater systems, drives her ambitions. “Seawater has its complexities as it’s always and ever-changing, which is an integral part of the Oil and Gas Industry,” she said. Her goal is to become a Subject Matter Expert in oilfield seawater systems and chemical treatments. With her dedication and passion, Pancham exemplifies the dynamic opportunities available in Guyana’s burgeoning oil and gas sector. “The industry is a driving force for growth,” she said. “I am a testimony of that.”
