Guyana Electric has launched specialized training courses in medium and high-voltage cable terminations and joints, aimed at improving installation practices and network reliability. Chief Executive Officer, Keon Howard shared details in an exclusive interview with OilNOW.

Howard said the training combines product familiarization with hands-on installation skills. Products covered include Raychem cable accessories, SIMEL mechanical connectors, and AMPACT overhead connectors.

Courses are designed to ensure installers gain the technical and manual expertise needed for proper installation. Participants who pass the practical assessment may earn certification, such as the Energy Product Familiarization certificate.

He noted this effort is tied to Guyana’s largest grid expansion, which includes “new 230 kV and 69 kV lines and substations connected to the Gas‑to‑Energy plant”.

Howard said the training supports “a transition from a radial, blackout‑prone grid to a redundant, modern high‑voltage network”. He added that the program aims to “create a homegrown talent pipeline capable of constructing, maintaining, and safeguarding this sophisticated power infrastructure.”

Customized and on-site training options are also available to meet client-specific needs.

All trainers are certified experts in high-voltage applications and deliver tailored content, such as for 132kV dry plug-in terminations, GIS switchgear, or 3-piece joints. The program supports Guyana’s goal of building a resilient electricity system that reduces outages and powers economic growth.
