ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge told the fourth cohort of trainee technicians graduating from the Guyana Technical Training College Inc. (GTTCI) that opportunities offshore are expanding alongside the country’s oil production.
“There’s a job waiting for you offshore. Meet the industry’s needs,” he said.
The programme, developed through a partnership between ExxonMobil Guyana, SBM Offshore Guyana, the Guyana government and Learn Corp. International, saw 20 participants complete training in Canada and Guyana before earning Advanced Diplomas in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and production disciplines.
Routledge said the initiative is designed to prepare Guyanese for immediate roles offshore. “When they recruited these graduates… they can benefit from that, and know that at the end of it, if they completed the work, completed the course, there was a job waiting for them offshore,” he said.
“We’re counting on you to operate the facilities offshore, to safely deliver production, which is now sitting at over 900,000 barrels a day. By the end of this year we’ll grow to over a million barrels a day,” Routledge said.
Routledge added that industry growth depends on a capable workforce. “But it needs the right people with the right skills to make it happen. And you are an instrumental part,” he added.
“You are… extremely well prepared… it is a magnificent world-class facility, simulator facilities,” the ExxonMobil Guyana President said, noting that graduates received a fully internationally accredited City and Guilds certificate.

SBM Offshore Country General Manager Martin Cheong said the program reflects efforts to build local capacity. “This is not just about completing a program. It’s about your journey… of your career, with SBM Offshore,” he said.
With advancements in the training program, Cheong shared that this fourth batch is the last to travel to Canada, as future trainees will be able to complete their full training locally.

“For us at SBM Offshore, this is something we are generally proud of. From the early stages, we have supported the development of this file, the factor facility, with a clearer vision in mind, to build local capacity, to create opportunities at home and to ensure that Guyanaes can be developed to international standards without having to leave the country,” Cheong said.
