Guyanese Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, revealed on Friday that the Department of Energy will fall under the Ministry of Natural Resources ahead of the establishment of a Petroleum Commission.

“Under the new portfolio, the gazetted portfolio, the Department of Energy will fall under the Minister of Natural Resources,” Mr. Jagdeo said at a press briefing at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, on the outskirts of Georgetown.

He said the government will be moving to establish a Petroleum Commission over the next six months which will be the lead body for matters related to the petroleum sector.

Mr. Jagdeo also said an advisory group will be established “made up mainly of Guyanese” which will be advising President Irfaan Ali on matters in the oil and gas sector.

Mr. Vickram Bharrat was appointed as the new Minister of Natural Resources a week ago, as part of the new Cabinet established under the Irfaan Ali administration.
