Dear Editor,

It has been more than one month since the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Berbice River Bridge, and the Wismar-McKenzie Bridge became toll-free. This decision is a significant step toward easing the financial burden on residents across the country.

As a resident of the West Side, I am particularly grateful. I traverse the Demerara Harbour Bridge at least six times per week, and with the removal of the toll, I stand to save approximately $62,400 per year.  For some, this figure may appear modest, but for me, it is meaningful.

In fact, I have chosen to be proactive: each day, I set aside the $200 I would have spent on the toll, placing it into a savings tin. As the old folks say, “One, one dutty does build dam.” I am eager to see just how big a dam I can build from these savings.

However, while vehicle owners like myself are seeing direct benefits, I cannot ignore the plight of commuters who rely on public transportation. Just this week, I found out that taxi drivers crossing the Demerara Harbour Bridge, as well as the Berbice River, have not lowered their fares, despite the toll being removed. This means that commuters are not enjoying the relief intended by the government’s decision.

I am urging the relevant authorities to look into this matter. Some level of regulation or intervention is necessary to ensure that the removal of bridge tolls truly benefits all, not just vehicle owners, but also those who depend daily on taxis and minibuses.

The toll-free bridges present both savings and opportunities. Let us ensure that the gains are shared fairly across the board.

Yours truly,
A West Sider
