Dear Editor,
Recently, while scrolling through social media, I came across many heartfelt acknowledgements celebrating women especially those working in Guyana’s oil and gas sector. As a young woman, hearing the stories was truly inspiring.
For a long time, industries like oil and gas were often viewed as spaces mainly for men. Today, we are seeing more women stepping into important roles, not just working in the sector, but also leading teams, managing projects, and shaping the future of the energy sector.
Women like Makini Hackett, Environmental Specialist at ExxonMobil Guyana and Maryam Nasir, Data Scientist at SBM Offshore Guyana, just to name a few, are professionals making their mark in driving change in the sector.
Seeing women in these spaces sends a powerful message to young girls that there is room for them in every field. As a young woman, it makes me proud to see Guyanese women breaking barriers and contributing meaningfully to such a major sector of our economy.
It is also encouraging to see oil and gas companies, the government and institutions supporting initiatives that empower women entrepreneurs and professionals. Programmes that provide training, mentorship, and business support help ensure that women are not only present in the economy but actively driving it forward.
The achievements by the many women positioned in the sector are proof that when opportunities are opened and support systems are in place, women can thrive in any industry. Their stories inspire me to pursue my own ambitions with greater confidence and to believe that young women like me also have a place in shaping Guyana’s future.
I hope we continue to highlight these stories of progress. They inspire the next generation, including young women like me, who dare to dream bigger and aim higher.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Samuels
