Guyana’s Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department conducted a detailed inspection aboard the Liza Unity floating, production storage and offloading vessel last week.

The exercise assessed compliance with Guyana’s OSH Act 99:06, International Safety Standards, and National Labour laws, a Nov. 21 release from the ministry said.

Led by OSH Officer Nazmoon Jafarally Prittipaul and Labour Officer Mark Burnett, the team reviewed health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) policies, personnel training, emergency response systems, risk assessments, waste management, and record-keeping practices.

“Crew members were briefed on key topics, including the National Minimum Wage Order, working conditions, overtime, termination, probationary periods, notice periods, paid leave, and the Labour Advice App,” the release stated.

The visit allowed ministry representatives to engage with management and employees, ensuring awareness of roles under the OSH Act and the labour ministry’s services.

This inspection forms part of the ministry’s broader initiative to enhance workplace safety and workers’ rights, especially in the oil and gas sector.

The Liza Unity FPSO is Guyana’s second oil production vessel and was built by SBM Offshore with a record sustainable design. It is serving as a model for future FPSOs built for Exxon’s Stabroek Block projects. It was built with a nameplate capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) but has to date safely demonstrated production levels of 250,000 bpd

ExxonMobil is the operator of the Stabroek Block with a 45% stake. Its co-venturers are Hess (30%) and CNOOC (25%).
