Pre-FEED engineering work has commenced on Woodside Energy’s Calypso Project, located 220 km off Trinidad’s coast in water depths of 2,100 meters. This development follows the completion of conceptual studies and the selection of an infield host as the preferred development concept in the first half of 2023.

Stuart R. Young, Trinidad’s Minister of Energy and Energy Industries received an update on the project’s progress during a meeting with Woodside Energy executives on September 25, 2024. The meeting was held at the Ministry’s headquarters at the International Waterfront Complex, Port-of-Spain.

Kellyanne Lochan, Woodside’s Country Manager for Trinidad and Tobago, informed Minister Young that “pre-feed engineering work is progressing.” She was joined by Vice President of Marketing Onne Peters, Calypso Project Director Stacy Patrick, and Corporate Affairs Manager Dr. Carla Noel-Mendez.

The Calypso Project, comprising several gas discoveries in Block 23(a) and Block TTDAA 14, is situated in an area with existing infrastructure and a “favorable demand outlook”, according to Woodside. Marketing and commercial discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders to explore options for monetizing the resource. Woodside, which holds a 70% participating interest in the project, concluded the Calypso appraisal drilling program in December 2021, with all wells encountering hydrocarbons.

Trinidad has been trying to push for projects that will partially reverse the gradual decline in its output. The country has about 10 years of gas production left based on less than 12 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas reserves.
