The Private Sector Commission (PSC) is the latest Guyanese body to condemn the display of a map at a conference showing the New River Triangle area as part of Suriname.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, the PSC said it “disassociate[s] itself from this significant lapse in national responsibility by those Guyanese present.”

The event was organized by the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce in Suriname, chaired by Guyanese, Vishnu Doerga. Virjanand Depoo, Guyana’s Ambassador to Suriname, as well as other officials, represented Guyana at the conference.
The Guyanese attendees raised no objections, the release said.
“We, therefore, call on Mr. Doerga, under whose leadership the event was conducted, to issue an apology to the Government and people of Guyana for permitting this offensive incident to occur without raising any objection or taking appropriate action,” the PSC stated.
Guyana’s Foreign Ministry in a recent statement reaffirmed that the New River Triangle is part of Guyana’s internationally recognized territory, based on a 1936 agreement between Brazil, Great Britain, and The Netherlands. A joint boundary commission determined the source of the Kutari River as the tri-junction point where Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil meet, marked by a monument.
The ministry emphasized that Guyana has consistently upheld this boundary and exercised sovereignty over the area. It said any depiction suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and does not reflect the legally established border.
