Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname will begin a seismic survey offshore Suriname next week to assess potential oil and gas resources in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The company announced on March 19 via LinkedIn post that the research will involve both 2D and 3D seismic data acquisition in deepwater areas offshore. “Staatsolie will soon start a 2D/3D seismic survey at sea to better understand how the subsurface under the seabed is structured and whether oil and gas deposits are present.”
The company said the survey will cover a large offshore area. “The research takes place in Suriname’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), 90 to 370 km off the coast. The research area covers a total of approximately 20,000 km².”
An online stakeholder session has been planned to provide details on the work and its findings. “During the meeting, we will explain what has been investigated and what the most important findings are. You can also ask questions during the session.”
The meeting is scheduled for March 30, 2026.
The survey is being conducted as Suriname advances exploration opportunities in the offshore basin following the launch of its Open-Door Offering in 2025. The program opened significant acreage in the Guyana-Suriname Basin to exploration and production companies seeking to evaluate potential resources.
Suriname has long produced oil onshore, but its offshore potential is only now being unlocked. The GranMorgu project in Block 58 is set to start in 2028 with a capacity of around 220,000 barrels per day and a cost in excess of US$10 billion.
