The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) is looking to promote cultural tourism as it gears up for the expected growth in the influx of visitors with the coming of oil production in 2020.

President of THAG, Andrea de Caires, during an interview on Tuesday at Cara Lodge, Quamina Street, Georgetown, said, “The most important thing these days if you go to the market you find out what people are interested in is cultural tourism. They want to come and feel Guyana for the time that they are here so working with the tour operators and again working with the Guyana Tourism Authority to make sure that we increase our digital marketing and trade show presence and that we have a targeted marketing plan that we can implement so we can encourage more people to come and see the most amazing country in the world.”

De Caires says with the economic changes that are bound to take place with the emerging oil and gas sector, it is imperative that the tourism sector elevates its standards to further add value to the industry.

She said, “One of the things that we have talked about this past year is that we have our friends from Exxon in the country and their safety standards are higher than our own, (so) we need to raise ours.”

Guyana is also looking to secure an annual arrival rate of half a million visitors by 2025.
