More than 60 percent of Venezuela’s fuel supply has been shut down following a gas explosion at a key production facility run by state firm Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

At least eight people were killed in the incident while the injured were taken to hospital. The cause of the blast remains unclear.

Reports first surfaced on Monday about the incident which took place at the Muscar Gas Operations Complex outside of Punta de Mata, in Monagas State.

Just last month, a large fire at a crude storage tank in the country’s Western region left more than 20 people with minor burns.
