Dear Editor,

The continued deliberate act by Venezuela to threaten and disrupt the peace and prosperity of Guyana must come to an end. Time and time again they have shown us that they have no respect for the rule of law.

The latest aggression by Venezuela not only goes against international law but also the Joint Declaration of Argyle for Dialogue and Peace, where they agreed to not threaten or use force against one another in any circumstances.

However, their actions over the weekend, approaching one of the oil vessels operating within Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was ludicrous and beyond anything they have done in the past. What is even more alarming is that the claim by Venezuela that the oil vessel was operating within their EEZ.

Such acts should not be taken lightly as they are not only threatening our sovereignty but also the future of the land many call home. Thankfully, the international community, more notably the United States, almost immediately issued strong warnings towards Venezuela, urging them to desist or face consequences.

Nevertheless, we must keep the legal pressure on Venezuela. We must have continued calls for peace, respect for the law, engage the International Court of Justice, and more importantly, secure military support of allies.

Guyana’s economy is growing at an unprecedented pace and the world is observing. While many are seeking ways in which they can invest and be a part of Guyana’s glory, others like Venezuela are seeking to bully and take our home.

Sincerely,

Romel Khan
