The energy sector is a vast and complex machine, powered by countless moving parts—each playing a crucial role in keeping the industry running. Among them are women who have become indispensable cogs driving progress and innovation. These trailblazers may be small pieces in a massive system, but their impact is anything but minor.
At OilNOW, we celebrate those who continue to make an indelible mark on the industry. In this article, we asked these remarkable women to share their insights on what it means to contribute to the success of Guyana’s oil and gas sector.
We have women like Pradeepa Bholanath, whose work is driving meaningful change in the energy and environmental sectors:
“As women, we are at the heart of sustainable development, and in Guyana, our Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) empowers us to lead the way. From protecting our forests to advancing developments in the oil and gas sector, we are shaping a future where economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. This Women’s Day, let us continue to drive climate action ensuring that our natural wealth benefits all generations to come.”
Supporting the industry’s workforce and development, Onecia Johnson, Human Resource Manager at SBM Offshore Guyana, plays a key role in fostering an inclusive and thriving workplace:
“As the Human Resources Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, I am immensely proud to contribute to the growth of the company by nurturing talent, fostering a diverse and inclusive employee culture and aligning people with our strategic vision. By finding the right people and building competency, we ensure long-term success and employee satisfaction. We recognize that diversity is a driving force behind innovation and progress and therefore we remain committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where women are empowered to thrive, lead and inspire. Let us endeavour to continuously celebrate the incredible women in all industries who are breaking barriers, leading with excellence, and shaping the future of Guyana.”
Pioneering new paths in maritime navigation, Cadet Safina Lutchman stands as a testament to the growing opportunities for women in the industry:
“Guyana’s oil and gas sector continues to grow rapidly; inclusivity and opportunities for women in this traditionally male-dominated field are steadily increasing. It is an honor to be part of this transformation where the status quo is being challenged.”
In offshore operations, Yashawantie Jennifer Pancham showcases resilience in a demanding field:
“Being in the oil and gas industry, and a work environment dominated by men, my all-time quote is ‘I never let my gender define who I am and what I am capable of doing.’ It means showing resilience, adaptability, and paving the way for future generations. Women are challenging norms, shaping the industry’s future, and proving that talent, not gender, defines success. We are breaking barriers. We are the benchmarkers!”
Driving sustainable initiatives in the sector, Gwenetta Fordyce, SBM Offshore Guyana’s Sustainability Lead, highlights the importance of balancing development with long-term benefits:
“As a woman and the Sustainability Lead at SBM Offshore Guyana, contributing to the success of Guyana’s oil and gas industry is about supporting energy development while ensuring long-term environmental and social benefits. It is also about driving innovation, sustainability, and community engagement for a lasting positive impact.”
For Gomatie Gangadin, Public Relations Manager at Guyana Shore Base Inc., being part of the sector goes beyond personal achievement—it’s about creating space for others:
“Being a woman in Guyana’s oil and gas sector is both a privilege and a responsibility. While I work on carving out my place, I am also driven to uplift and create opportunities for other women to prove that no industry is beyond our reach.”
Women entrepreneurs like Filisha Duke, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Sure Gig Inc., are making significant contributions to the industry’s growth:
“Globally, males dominate the oil and gas sector. As a woman and specifically a Guyanese businesswoman, being able to contribute through my skills, knowledge, and expertise towards the oil sector in my own country is a remarkable and fulfilling accomplishment.”
Meanwhile, Rowena Elliot, Vice President of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Guyana and Office Manager at Blue Water Shipping Guyana, is focused on opening doors for future generations:
“In the heart of Guyana’s energy revolution, I haven’t just stepped into a role—I’m thrilled to be paving the way for women and girls to lead, innovate, and thrive in a sector that powers the future. Together, we’re redefining what’s possible.”
And how could I forget, ME!
“As a Research and Content Developer and Producer at OilNOW, I take pride in my written and video creations, telling the story of Guyana’s oil success for everyone to stay in the know. Being one of the few Guyanese women in this niche, ensuring accuracy and simplicity is a responsibility I uphold. This International Women’s Day, I want women to be loud and not afraid to take up space and their rightful seat at the table.”
These women, and many more like them, are shaping the future of Guyana’s energy sector. Their leadership, expertise, and resilience continue to break barriers, proving that when women rise, the entire industry moves forward.
