An expression of interest has been issued for the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) as the government advances its clean energy agenda.
The announcement was made on February 17 at the Marriott Hotel during the Fifth Edition of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo.
“Today we have launched the expression of interest is out for the Amaila Falls hydro project,” President Dr. Irfaan Ali said.
He said the initiative forms part of a broader energy strategy. “Because we’re now building, completing our forest plans, and we are in the process of finalizing our second plan.”
The President said Guyana is positioning itself as a regional energy player. “And we are working with our partners to leverage our gas and our petroleum to become an energy exporter in the region, exporter in terms of infrastructure and logistics.”

The project is expected to deliver a minimum installed capacity of 165 megawatts. It is a central component of Guyana’s clean energy transition.
While the hydropower facility will be developed separately from its transmission network, the government said the project’s size may be adjusted to leverage newer turbine technologies, potentially allowing greater power generation.
A key point of contact for the Amaila Falls Project is the task force managing the Gas-to-Energy project. The first and second phases of the Gas-to-Energy project and AFHP would be the largest power generation projects in Guyana’s history. With the Amaila Falls Project seeking a capacity of at least 165 MW, the first and second phases of Gas-to-Energy are each targeted at 300 MW.
The first phase of Gas-to-Energy is currently under construction and is the only one of the three projects for which construction has already started.
Amaila was initially planned by the administration for start-up in 2027. But talks with its last contractor fell apart in 2022.
The government is now working to ensure the project comes on stream.
