Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has designated a 500-meter buffer zone around an offshore pipeline installed by ExxonMobil Guyana, warning mariners that the area is an anchor-free zone and urging extreme caution when navigating nearby.

The regulator said the pipeline extends from the West Coast of Demerara to approximately 105.6 nautical miles (195.6 km) offshore, covering an area of 56.8 square nautical miles (194.9 sq km).

It was installed to transport offshore gas to shore, where an integrated facility will process it for power generation and natural gas liquids production.

MARAD’s notice follows the completion of pipeline-laying activities from the West Coast of Demerara to the Stabroek Block by ExxonMobil last year. The infrastructure forms a key component of Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project.

Earlier slated for completion in 2025, the project could roll over into 2026 due to delays in the construction of the integrated facility at Wales, West Bank of Demerara. Once operational, the GtE project is expected to double Guyana’s electricity generation capacity, cut power costs by 50%, and support industrial expansion in the country’s rapidly growing economy.

The government expects the project to enhance the competitiveness of manufacturing and other energy-intensive sectors while reducing reliance on costly imported fuel.
