Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. and Suriname’s Tax Department have launched a three-year capacity-building program to strengthen tax and customs expertise in the oil and gas sector. The cooperation document was signed in Paramaribo on April 10, 2026.
The initiative will train tax officials involved in assessing and controlling oil and gas activities, along with customs officers overseeing import and export flows tied to the sector. Activities will be rolled out in phases over three years, with training delivered in Suriname and supported by international knowledge exchange where needed.

Staatsolie said the program is designed to address the growing technical demands of Suriname’s offshore industry. “Suriname’s offshore oil and gas sector presents significant opportunities but also places high demands on the government,” the company said. “Accurate taxation and effective oversight therefore require up-to-date, specialized knowledge.”
The state oil company said it is making a targeted contribution to strengthening government institutions to ensure oil revenues are managed effectively. “Through the three-year Tax Department Capacity-Building Programme, Staatsolie is making a targeted contribution to strengthening government institutions, ensuring that tax revenues from oil and gas can be managed with due care and deployed for the development of Suriname,” it stated.

The program is linked to Staatsolie’s 45th anniversary in December 2025 under the theme “Empowering communities and institutions.”
Suriname is advancing its offshore oil ambitions, with the GranMorgu development in Block 58 expected to begin production in 2028 at around 220,000 barrels per day. The project is estimated to cost more than US$10 billion.
