TotalEnergies recently announced that the Stena DrillMAX will soon head to Suriname’s Block 64 to drill the Macaw-1 prospect.
The 6th generation harsh environment dual-activity dynamically positioned (DP3) drillship is currently in Curaçao for maintenance. The vessel is equipped with dual derricks and can drill in water depths of up to 10,000 feet.

TotalEnergies said the drilling will begin in the second quarter of this year.
Block 64, spanning 6,262 km² and located 250 km offshore, was awarded during the 2022-2023 bid round. TotalEnergies operates the block with a 40% stake. QatarEnergy and Petronas each hold 30%. The companies signed a production-sharing agreement with Staatsolie in 2023.
The drilling campaign is separate from the US$10.5 billion GranMorgu development.
With this development, the company is marking another step in exploring Suriname’s offshore energy resources. “TotalEnergies’ Drilling Team is preparing a rig visit to ensure safety and operational standards are met.”
