Trinidad offers scholarships to citizens to meet petroleum industry needs

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has opened applications for ten scholarships aimed at bolstering the country’s petroleum and natural gas sectors through the development of skilled human resources.

The scholarships, offered under production sharing agreements with oil companies, are available to citizens of Trinidad and Tobago for the academic year beginning in September 2025. Both undergraduate and postgraduate studies are eligible.

According to the Ministry of Education, the initiative targets critical skills gaps in the energy sector. Areas of study span a wide range of disciplines, including Petroleum Law (postgraduate), Engineering and Mining, Geological and Geophysical Engineering (undergraduate and postgraduate), Asset Integrity Management, Infrastructure Planning and Management, Critical Infrastructure Systems (postgraduate), and Economics and Mathematical or Economic Modeling (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Other eligible disciplines include Oil, Gas, and Energy Policy (postgraduate), Geology, Geophysics, and Geoscience (postgraduate), Renewable Energy Technology (postgraduate), Petroleum Economics and Management (postgraduate), Environmental Studies (postgraduate), and Strategic Procurement Management as well as Procurement and Contract Management (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Funding will be provided by the government of Trinidad and Tobago for the duration of the academic programmes, subject to limits: up to three years for undergraduate degrees or four if required by the institution; 12 months for taught master’s programmes; two years for research master’s; three years for Master of Philosophy; and four years for doctoral degrees.

Covered expenses include tuition and compulsory fees, personal and other allowances, research and conference costs for postgraduate students, round-trip economy-class airfare where applicable, spouse and child allowances for postgraduates, and thesis or dissertation expenses.

Applicants must be between 18 and 55 years old and be citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who are not permanent residents of any other country. The deadline for submission is May 9, 2025, at 4 p.m.

Trinidad and Tobago is a mature oil and gas producer, with its energy sector contributing significantly to government revenue and exports. The country hosts major multinational energy companies and operates a network of offshore and onshore production facilities, liquefied natural gas and petrochemical operations.
